The NFL free agency frenzy is about to kick off with the market opening next week. Among the Pro-Bowlers and All-Pro free agents, one name that stands out is former Tennessee Titans megastar Derrick Henry. The 2019 and 2020 NFL rushing leader expects to attract much attention. Still, according to senior NFL insider Matt Lombardo of Fanbuzz, the Baltimore Ravens could be the biggest beneficiaries if they sign the rusher. This potential signing could be a game-changer for the Ravens.
Lombardo: Deems Derrick Henry a Must Sign for the Baltimore Ravens
In Matt Lombardo’s “One NFL Free Agent Each Team Must Sign” article, the NFL insider assigned one-time All-Pro running back Derrick Henry to the Baltimore Ravens, the reigning AFC North champs. Lombardo did not mince words, calling Henry “the missing ingredient” to a Super Bowl run in Baltimore.
“Henry would be the between-the-tackles bruiser the Ravens need for the offense to reach new heights. Few combinations would be more taxing on a defense than being asked with containing Lamar Jackson’s elusiveness as a scrambler out of the pocket, Zay Flowers’ explosiveness on the perimeter, and the physicality of Henry’s running style. Henry could be the missing ingredient to lift the Ravens into a Super Bowl as early as 2024.”
Baltimore made the AFC Championship last season after posting the best record in the NFL and earning an MVP performance from quarterback Lamar Jackson. However, despite keeping Kansas City scoreless in the second half, they fell short 17-10. Jackson struggled, throwing for 272 yards and a touchdown, but accounted for two turnovers.
Derrick Henry: Fresh Off Worst Season in Half Decade
Henry rushed for 1,167 yards and 12 scores in 17 games last season, but it came on an NFL-high 280 carries. His 4.2 yards per rush attempt marked his lowest career average since 2017. However, his former team, the Tennessee Titans, could have done more to provide for the Alabama product. The Titans struggled to pass the ball while housing a mediocre offensive line.
Fortunately for Henry and potential suitors, the 30-year-old is best when his team is good. From 2019 to 2020, he led the league in rush attempts (681), rushing yards (3,567), and rushing touchdowns (33), with the Titans winning 18 games during that period. Baltimore would be an ideal fit as it owns one of the best rosters in football.
