Ashford is just one of the latest quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal. Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy and Nebraska Cornhuskers starter Jeff Sims have also entered the Portal this week.
Robby Ashford: Leaving the Tigers as a Two-Time Transfer
Ashford, one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks from the class of 2020, played his first two seasons with the Oregon Ducks before transferring to Auburn. The six-foot-four, 225-pound gunslinger threw for 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns against seven picks in 12 games during the 2022 campaign. He completed 49% of his passes while rushing for 710 yards and seven scores. His best performance came against a ranked Arkansas Razorbacks squad in late October, throwing for 285 yards and one score while rushing 19 times for 87 yards. Ashford led the Tigers in passing yards and touchdowns while trailing just running back Tank Bigsby in yards gained via the ground.
However, the Auburn Tigers added Michigan State Spartans transfer Payton Thorne in 2023, regulating Ashford to a backup role. Ashford attempted just 27 passes this season, throwing for 145 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks. He ran for 217 yards and five scores.
Auburn Tigers: QB Depth Chart for 2024 Season
Barring a transfer portal entry of his own, quarterback Payton Thorne will return as the starting quarterback in 2024. He threw for 15 touchdowns against nine picks in 12 games this season. Thorne spent his first three seasons with the Michigan State Spartans, throwing for 8,172 yards and 49 touchdowns during that span.
The Tigers also have redshirt freshman Holden Geriner on the roster. A former four-star prospect who inked his name to the Auburn Tigers in 2021 has thrown just 12 passes in his college career. Hugh Freeze’s squad also expected to have four-star prospect Walker White, one of the top signal-callers in the upcoming class, on the team next fall.
