The Atlanta Falcons have had a tough stretch after elite quarterback Matt Ryan left the team in 2022. In that stretch, the team has invested substantial draft capital into the offense but without a quarterback, they haven’t been able to utilize anyway the way the team needs.
Well now that they brought in the legendary goofball Kirk Cousins on Monday afternoon, the 2024 season looks far more optimistic for Atlanta. On top of that, the team has elite talent everywhere with high first round picks tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receiver Drake London and running back Bijan Robinson. If the team could manage to bring in a secondary wide receiver to compliment London, this could be an elite offense in 2024.
Atlanta Falcons Bring in Talented Wide Receiver from Chicago
On that note, Atlanta managed to do just that on Tuesday morning when the team agreed to terms with former Chicago Bears star wide receiver Darnell Mooney. According to multiple reports, Mooney’s will last three years and will pay out up to $39 million for a player that has managed to be productive even on a disastrous Chicago Bears franchise.
After Atlanta has finally invested big money in a quarterback with Cousins and substantial money in a secondary receiver, I look to see this offense become one of the best units in the NFL in 2024. The balance and athleticism that will come from the overwhelming quantity and quality of playmakers on this unit will be overwhelming on opposing defenses.
Chicago has taken a big hit from the loss of Mooney after the former fifth round pick out of Tulane put up 2,593 receiving yards on 213 receptions with 11 touchdowns over four years with the Windy City club. Although he was an undersized receiver at 5’11” and 173 pounds, Mooney was able to provide a consistent target for young quarterback Justin Fields.
It is possible that the trading of one of his favorite receivers could be a signal of the end of Fields’ tenure in the city of Chicago. There is heavy speculation that he will be traded depending on if you believe Chicago will hold onto the number one overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. If they do, it is almost a guarantee that they select the outstanding USC Quarterback Caleb Williams.
Mooney will slot it as the secondary receiver to London on day one of his arrival to Atlanta. It is still possible that Atlanta goes after additional receivers in either the draft or free agency due to the lack of depth behind Mooney in the lineup. Mooney will provide some speed and consistency to this talented young offense. Look for him to have a productive year in 2024 with Cousins throwing him the ball.
