The Atlanta Falcons feel they are on the precipice of something great after hiring Los Angeles Rams coordinator Raheem Morris. They are on the verge on breaking through a weak NFC South and are feeling confident that Morris is the man that would get them over the hump.
In line with this, they made huge changes within their organization to give Morris every tool he needed to succeed in his first season as HC.
Atlanta Falcons Reorganize for Raheem Morris
The biggest changes will be at the football side of the organization. According to a recent report by The Spun’s Matt Hladik, both Morris and GM Terry Fontenot will now answer to owner Arthur Blank.
He further adds that Blank is removing some of the responsibility away from long-time executive Rich McKay:
Previously, the GM and head coach in Atlanta had reported to CEO Rich McKay, who has been with the franchise since 2008, first as the President/CEO until 2022 before his title was changed to just CEO last January.
Team president Greg Beadles remains in his post overseeing daily business operations.
“Direct quote from the release from Arthur Blank on Rich McKay: ‘While he’ll no longer be involved in day-to-day football operations, Rich’s role will broaden in our organization.’ The organization he’s referring to is the whole family of Blank’s businesses,” said ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.
11 Alive”s Reeves Jackson added further insight into the McKay situation:
“It is hard to quantify the positive things Rich has done to impact our organization over the last 21 years, laying a strong foundation for our football team and getting Mercedes-Benz Stadium built and functioning as one of the best in the world, chief among them,” Blank said. “While he’ll no longer be involved in day-to-day football operations, Rich’s role will broaden in our organization, and I’ll continue to trust him with some of the most important work we’re engaged in across the Blank Family of Businesses.”
A quick look into the Falcons fans’ reactions on social will tell you everything you need to know about their thoughts on McKay.
How will Morris Transform This Young Falcons Squad?
Raheem Morris will be coming off a good 2023 season with the Los Angeles Rams, but his on-field performance may leave a lot to be desired. Under his tutelage, the Rams defense allowed 3928 passing yards, 24 passing TDs, 1816 rushing yards, 14 rushing TDs, and snagged 10 picks.
The numbers don’t seem different from the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive numbers (3449 passing yards, 24 passing TDs, 2009 rushing yards, 11 rushing TDs, 8 INTs). It seems like an odd hire when you look at the numbers.
However, it’s vital to remember that Morris is also a member of the prestigious Mike Shanahan coaching tree. He’s also part of the famous 2013 Washington Commanders coaching staff that had Rams head coach Sean McVay, San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan, Green Bay Packers’ Matt LaFleur, and Miami Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel.
If the Falcons manage to hit it big with Morris’ return to The A, it will only add to the legend of this already impressive coaching tree.
