It has been a really tough couple of months for Alabama Football, at least comparable to what they are used to. This is something that isn’t said very much around Tuscaloosa, but ever since Nick Saban announced his retirement in mid-January, there has been significantly more bad news than good news.
Things may soon start going well again.
According to an On3 Sports article, Alabama successfully flipped a big (literally) commitment from Auburn on Saturday by landing defensive lineman Antonio Coleman. Coleman is considered the No. 122nd player nationally according to 247 Sports and is the No. 15th best lineman in the class of 2025.
Rough Month for Alabama
Nick Saban stepping away from the game came as a surprise to many, and let’s be honest, unless Bill Belichick was going to be the next guy hired, there was no hire that Alabama was going to get that was going to really appease the majority of the fanbase.
Following Saban leaving, the transfer portal opened for the Crimson Tide, and it was like a damn bursting. A total of 31 players entered the portal in the days following the announcement making Alabama fans for the first time since the early 2000’s that they weren’t on the top of the world.
The biggest issue with this was that the transfer portal had already closed for almost every other team in the nation. The only players who were able to commit to play for Alabama were either players who had already entered the transfer portal and hadn’t committed somewhere else yet, or were coming from a team who had also hired a new coach (Washington, Arizona, and Michigan to name a few).
Is the (Crimson) Tide Turning?
The good news is, regardless of Saban being there or not, Alabama is Alabama. There will still be hundreds of players who will want to play for the Crimson Tide, and they may soon get their chance once the transfer portal opens up again on April 15th-30th. When that happens, watch for big names to enter and commit to Alabama.
Also, watch for more commitment flips. As Kalen DeBoer puts his roster together, watch for more players like Antonio Coleman to switch their commitment. Alabama doesn’t lose many recruiting battles, and while they were down for a little bit, it seems like they may be getting right back up and ready to take control again.
