The Washington Commanders are preparing to take a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Washington has not been able to sustain success in that position for the last few years. The Commanders will be set for the next several years if they get the quarterback selection right.
General manager Adam Peters will have a ton of picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Washington will also have two picks in the second round. The Washington Commanders will have a lot of needs other than the quarterback position. They will need some help on the defensive side of the football and they could use another wide receiver and help on the offensive line.
Washington is in a rebuild also and this is not going to be a one-year fix for the franchise. The Commanders finished in last place in the NFC East last season and they didn’t win a game in NFC East play. Washington needs to catch up in trying to find talented football players.
One Thing That the Washington Commanders Can’t Do In the 2024 NFL Draft Is Trade Down With the Number Two Pick
The Commanders have kept their options open throughout the NFL Draft process. There were talks about certain teams trading up and maybe Washington trading down from number two. That is one thing that Washington can not do in this NFL Draft.
Even if the Washington Commanders want to accumulate more picks, they can’t really. Washington will have its choice of what to do at the quarterback position after quarterback Caleb Williams goes number one overall to the Chicago Bears.
If the Commanders wanted to trade down, the best they could do is move down one spot with the New England Patriots, otherwise, they can lose out on a quarterback entirely. The Minnesota Vikings are looking to trade up and yet while the 11th and 23rd picks in this year’s draft from Minnesota sound nice, Washington would be doing themselves a disservice.
There will be a lot of trades being conducted in this draft but the Commanders should not participate in doing that for at least with the second overall pick. If Washington didn’t need a quarterback, then it is a discussion that could be had, but they could maybe stay in the two spot anyway and take one of the wide receivers.
Since it is not, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, or Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy will be wearing a Washington Commanders uniform next season and beyond.
