The New York Giants are looking to trade up from the sixth selection to the third selection with the New England Patriots, according to multiple league sources who told Jordan Schultz, a Bleacher Report NFL Insider. The player that the Giants would be eyeing on with the third selection in this class is quarterback Drake Maye from North Carolina.
New York loves Maye much better in this class than J.J. McCarthy from Michigan. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are looking for their next franchise quarterback. When they were with the Buffalo Bills, they traded up also to go select Josh Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The New England Patriots have admitted that the third overall pick is open for business but will see if the Patriots actually wind up moving down in the draft or not. New England is more of in a rebuild stage rather than being just a quarterback-away stage.
The New York Giants Moving Up With the New England Patriots In the 2024 NFL Draft Would Signal the End of the Daniel Jones Era in New York
If the New York Giants did trade up with the New England Patriots on Thursday night, it would signal the end of the Daniel Jones era as the quarterback. What would be next for him, who potentially knows? There is a reason why Tommy DeVito is still on the roster for the Giants and why they also signed Drew Lock.
Would they trade Jones or would they have him sit out 2024 despite general manager Joe Schoen saying various times this offseason that he believes in him being the Week 1 starter? Well, those were all words, and making a trade to go get Drake Maye would be all of the action in this scenario.
Jones was the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke. Maye is from North Carolina and he has way more upside at this point. Daniel Jones ended last season with a Torn ACL and also has had some neck issues in the past with his NFL career.
His health can not be relied upon at this point. They need to turn the page at the quarterback position and this is why they are trying very hard to go get Drake Maye. If they don’t land him and get wide receiver Malik Nabers from LSU as a consolation prize, that won’t be a bad thing for the New York Giants organization and they could figure out other alternatives at the quarterback position.
As for the New England Patriots, they would not mind trading back with the Giants. New England needs to address other needs as well.
