The NFL has never hesitated to go beyond football and address social, economic, and racial issues in America. While this has divided its fanbase, the league remains the top-earning sports league in the world.
On Tuesday, the highest-grossing league in sports made another monumental decision regarding off-the-field issues. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the NFL will post “VOTE” branding in stadiums, with SVP of Social Responsibility Anna Isaacson emphasizing it as a non-partisan effort. The league will also reinstitute mandatory voter education training for staff members.

The fall of 2024 signifies a landmark time in America, with the 60th quadrennial presidential election happening in early November. At 82, incumbent President Joe Biden will run for re-election. Meanwhile, his predecessor, Donald J. Trump, will oppose him as he fights for his second term. Biden bested Trump in 2020, while this year will mark the first presidential election rematch in more than half a century.

The NFL is no stranger to branding its fields with slogans or words bringing awareness to real-world issues. The league will push for its fan base to get out and vote this fall. In 2020, commissioner Roger Goodell and the league stenciled “End Racism” and “It Takes All of Us” across end zone borders to push for diversity and inclusion.
The NFL also pushed for the performance of “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” traditionally known as the Black national anthem, at games, most recently taking place at the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, during the height of the league’s emphasis on racial equality in America, players could don helmet decals to memorialize victims of systemic racism.
