Much like the Denver Broncos, the New York Jets are one of the few NFL teams almost no one in the league wants to play for. With the coming season set to open soon, the franchise will face several challenges that shape it for the better or worse.
The 2023 season was a major disappointment for the Jets, as they failed to capitalize on the high expectations created by the offseason acquisition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Despite entering the year with Super Bowl aspirations, the Jets finished with a 7-10 record, extending their playoff drought to 13 consecutive seasons.

Rodgers’ season-ending torn Achilles tendon in Week 1 was a devastating blow, and the poor quarterback play that followed from Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle further derailed the team’s aspirations. The Jets started 4-3 but then suffered a five-game losing streak, ultimately finishing the year with a 3-2 record in their final five games.
The Jets’ fourth consecutive season with at least 10 losses highlighted the team’s ongoing struggle for consistent success. Injuries, inconsistent quarterback play, and the inability to capitalize on opportunities all contributed to the Jets’ disappointing campaign, leaving them searching for answers as they looked to end their long postseason drought.

The coming season doesn’t bode well for the Jets when it comes to attracting guys to come play for them. In an article posted on Bleacher Report, Alex Ballentine expounded on what made the team one of the worst NFL trade destinations.
“The best-case scenario is a 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers comes back from an Achilles tear and makes the Jets a Super Bowl contender. Even in that scenario, there would be questions about if he can carry that into 2025.
The worst-case scenario is that Rodgers gets hurt again or isn’t the same quarterback he once was and Nathaniel Hackett has to make things work as the offensive coordinator.
The Jets have talent on both sides of the ball, but another season with injuries and no playoffs would lead to major changes—definitely at head coach, possibly at quarterback and maybe at some of their talented core.
There are a lot of unknowns that make it a less appealing destination,” Ballentine wrote.
As seen in Ballentine’s analysis, both ends of the spectrum doesn’t necessarily bode well for the Jets. The usage of an aging and controversial quarterback like Rodgers is just the tip of the iceberg and there’s a lot of problems that need solving first before players would actually want to play for New York.

It remains to be seen whether the Jets can surpass the low expectations set on them and surprise everybody. In any case, a lot of people will still tune in to see how they do in the coming season.
