New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton has not reported to voluntary offseason workouts and is looking for a new contract, according to sources who told ESPN. This is an interesting and surprising development for the franchise.
This is not something Giants fans on the Bingo Card for this offseason. At 27 years old, he is looking to get paid and it will be interesting to see whether general manager Joe Schoen budges or not. Last season, Darius Slayton caught 50 passes for 770 yards receiving and four touchdowns, along with averaging 15.4 yards per reception.
If the Giants were to select either Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, or Rome Odunze with the sixth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft next week, they would instantly become the top wide receiver on the roster. Slayton would then be the number two or three wide receiver on the roster.
Slayton wants to get paid because he has led the team in receiving yards the past four out of five seasons and did not go over 1,000 yards this season however. If they take one of the wide receivers, would Schoen trade him to another team or would Slayton just show up eventually? That is something that remains to be seen.
New York Giants Fans Respond To Darius Slayton Not Showing Up To Offseason Workouts
Giants fans were surprised when they found out that Slayton did not show up to voluntary offseason workouts because he wanted a new contract. New York fans responded to this on Twitter by saying:
Oh god… Slayton is good, but there is not shot I’m extending him or even thinking about it until after the draft.
If NYG draft a receiver, they can afford to let Slayton walk and keep costs down long-term. https://t.co/7QrYDGuU65

Darius Slayton asking for an extension cause he knows the Giants drafting Drake Maye which guarantees he’s a 1,000 yard WR (I’m losing my mind) pic.twitter.com/6OkCdXtcAZ

Forced into being a #1 WR every year. 5th round pick. Has gone against plenty of CB1s. Has led the team in receiving yards 4 out of the last 5 years. Hasn’t had a competent QB or an OL to allow him to get down field. Took a pay cut. Classact.
Extend Darius Slayton. 🗽#NYGiants pic.twitter.com/amg98jIesA— Bobby Spence (@postcrabcore) April 17, 2024
Well, if the Giants do draft a quarterback, it would make sense for Slayton to ask for a pay raise. If it backfires on him, then Slayton may not be on the Giants next season also.
