The New York Giants secondary will have a lot of question marks between now and training camp. The only sure thing about the Giants’ secondary heading into next season is that Deonte Banks will be the starting cornerback.
Banks was a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Maryland. He has a lot of room to improve in his second season with the franchise. Deonte Banks has the potential to be a shutdown cornerback in the NFL.
One of the biggest questions for the New York Giants will be who could be the other starting cornerback opposite of Banks. The Giants did not bring back cornerback Adoree Jackson because they chose not to re-sign him.
New York Giants Cornerback Cor’Dale Flott Is Another Player To Watch For During Mini Camp
The Giants’ secondary is very thin at the cornerback position. Flott on the depth chart is projected to be the other starting cornerback on the roster opposite of Deonte Banks. Dru Phillips and Aaron Robinson are projected to be the backup cornerbacks on the New York Giants roster.
Kevin Hickey of Sporting News thinks that New York Giants cornerback Cor’Dale Flott is one of five players to watch out for during the mandatory mini-camp period this week. Hickey wrote:
“Currently leading the competition for the cornerback spot opposite Deonte Banks, Flott has the inside track to win the job once the spring ends. The coaching staff seems to be pretty high on Flott taking a step forward in his third season.
A third-round pick by the Giants in the 2022 NFL Draft, Flott has appeared in 25 games while making 13 starts over the course of his two-year career. He’s recorded one interception to go along with seven passes defensed and two forced fumbles. According to Pro Football Focus, Flott allowed a 95.6 passer rating on 62 targets in 2023.”
It will be interesting to see how he performs then. He has been up and down throughout the first two years of his NFL career and had to work his way up. Tre Hawkins III was one of the starters for the New York Giants last season at cornerback, but that changed in a hurry.
Cor’Dale Flott is going to need to be reliable for the Giants in the secondary this season. The defense has a lot of potential under new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. Wink Martindale was let go in the offseason.
