New York Giants tight end Darren Waller has been back and forth about retirement before the start of the 2024 season. Waller last season for the Giants missed some time with a hamstring injury.
He caught 52 passes for 552 yards receiving and one touchdown last season. Darren Waller averaged 10.6 yards per reception and also was targeted 74 times last season. Waller has had a history of injuries and he is 31 years old.

He was acquired in a trade during the 2023 offseason with the Las Vegas Raiders. With Waller potentially retiring, Daniel Bellinger would be the starting tight end for the Giants during the 2024 season.
Bleacher Report Thinks That the New York Giants Should Go Ahead and Cut Tight End Darren Waller Anyway

The Bleacher Report Scouting Department created ways for each NFL team to create more cap space before the start of the 2024 NFL regular season. One of the ways for the Giants to make that happen is to release Waller from the roster.
The reasoning that the Bleacher Report Scouting Department gave as to why the New York Giants should make this move is as follows:
“At some point, the Giants have to sort out the future of tight end Darren Waller, who is considering retirement. New York isn’t looking to rush a decision.
“We’re giving Darren his space,” general manager Joe Schoen said in April, per Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.
However, releasing Waller after June 1 would save $12.1 million in cap space.”
General Manager Joe Schoen is probably waiting until June to cut Darren Waller at this point and this is probably why we haven’t heard anything on that front yet. It would be a good move for the Giants to cut him. They need as much cap space as possible and they are not going to be a contender in the NFC this season anyway.
The New York Giants need to release him because it feels as if he isn’t that committed to the 2024 season. Head coach Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen have a lot they need to take care of before the season and this should be one of the things they need to do when June 1 comes.
It would be a surprise if Waller were on the roster to start the season. Other than Daniel Bellinger, rookie Theo Johnson from Penn State is a player that they think could help them this season and beyond. Johnson was a fourth-round pick (107th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Giants are excited about his potential moving forward. Releasing Waller would also help Johnson get more reps during OTAs and training camps.

Jack Stoll is also another tight end on the New York Giants roster. He is currently listed fourth on the depth chart. For now, the Giants have Waller listed as the first tight end on the depth chart, but that all can change within the next couple of weeks.
