Give credit to Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles; he’s doing everything in his power to help the quarterback he selected with the No. 1 pick in the draft succeed in his first season in the league. The Bears added another offensive weapon following OTAs in June.
Caleb Williams is struggling this spring
Multiple reports indicate that Williams has shown an impressive arm during OTAs in May and June. He’s started to become more consistent during the 7-on-7 drill. However, Williams has struggled during the pre-snap offense and is even having difficulty taking a snap during mandatory minicamp. He’s also struggled during periods of 11-on-11 as Williams navigates the pass rush.
The Bears added six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen this spring via trade with the Los Angeles Chargers. They signed running back D’Andre Swift, who is coming off a Pro Bowl season with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears also drafted Rome Odunze with the No. 9 pick.
The Chicago Bears signed an All-Pro tight end
Per Jay Glazer with Fox Sports, the Bears are set to bring back Marcedes Lewis for the 2024 campaign. He played with the Bears for the 2023 season:
A little Sunday scoopage for @ChicagoBears fans, @MarcedesLewis89 tells me he is going to Chicago to meet with team tomorrow with intention of re-signing there tomorrow. Barring something unforeseen this will be Lewis’s 19th season as he comes in to help a young QB. 19 seasons, unreal #bears
Lewis will help the offensive line protect Williams
Lewis had a solid season in Chicago. He played in all 17 games and started in four games. Lewis is featured more as a blocking tight end and did that exceptionalism well at 39. Per Pro Football Focus, Lewis earned a 71.1 grade last season. He also caught four passes for 29 yards and one touchdown.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Lewis in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He spent time with the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Bears last offseason.
Lewis will give the Bears another crucial blocker for Williams. Williams, as a rookie, needs to feel safe in the pocket. Lewis can help with that. He can also occasionally be used to throw the defensive off as a pass catcher.
