Kyle McCord was a massive topic of conversation at the end of the 2023 college football season. Since the draft process has started there has not been much talk about him. Here, we will discuss what the future could look like for McCord.
Kyle McCord at Ohio State
McCord started his college career at Ohio State in 2021. He served as the backup to CJ Stroud during his first two seasons and saw almost no playing time. In 2023, McCord would finally get his shot to be the starter for the Buckeyes. Being the starter for Ohio State also meant that he would get to pair back up with his high school teammate Marvin Harrison Jr.
Kyle McCord and the Buckeyes saw lots of success throughout the 2023 season. Their game against Michigan would decide if Ohio State would make the College Football Playoff. The two top-ranked teams duked it out and it came down to McCord needing to lead the Buckeyes to a game-winning drive. Unfortunately, he threw an interception and Ohio State lost the game. While the Buckeyes still had an incredible season, this would leave them out of the College Football Playoff.
Ohio State finished the season 11-2 after losing their last two games to Michigan along with their bowl game against Missouri (McCord jumped in the Transfer Portal prior to the Cotton Bowl). Talks then began about McCord’s future with the Buckeyes whether would he go to the draft or stay for another season at Ohio State. Kyle McCord answered those questions when he announced that he would be transferring to Syracuse University.
McCord’s Future
Transferring to Syracuse was a very unexpected decision after many other top football programs were looking for a new quarterback. Syracuse football has struggled over the past couple of seasons as they finished with a 6-7 record in 2023. It is expected that McCord will declare for the draft in 2025 after one season with the Orange. Adding McCord to a struggling Syracuse team should elevate them to be competitive in the ACC in 2024.
Most of McCord’s future depends on how this season with the Orange goes. If McCord can lead Syracuse to compete for the ACC championship, then it seems he could still be one of the top QB prospects in next year’s draft. If McCord struggles next season, then it is likely that he will be a late-round pick or even undrafted in the 2025 NFL draft. McCord will have to be the leader of Syracuse as he does not have the superstars around him like he did at Ohio State.
Either way, this upcoming season is the most important in Kyle McCord’s career. There is a chance that McCord could still be a top prospect and have a successful NFL career, but that all depends on how next season goes.
