The Houston Texans are entering the 2024 NFL season in uncharted territory. For years, they have been one of the bottom teams in the league with zero chance of contention. Now, they are being viewed as a team that could contend for the Super Bowl.
DeMeco Ryans has completely changed the culture in Houston. It shows how important the hiring of a head can be. Add in rising superstar quarterback C.J. Stroud, and the Texans have the makings of something special for many years to come.
Houston has been extremely busy this offseason as they look to add even more talent to their roster. They acquired star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills in their biggest move of the offseason. Now, they have some decisions to make at the wide receiver position.
Houston Texans Called Upon To Make This Big 2024 Roster Cut
At this point in time, the Texans are absolutely loaded with talent at the wide receiver position. While that is a good problem to have, they’ll end up having to cut a wideout or two.
Marcus Mosher of The 33rd Team has revealed which wide receiver the Houston Texans should cut. He thinks veteran receiver Robert Woods should be the odd man out.
“Woods has had a remarkable career, but it’s time for the Texans to move on. They would save nearly $5 million by releasing (with $4.75 million in dead cap hits), which is a no-brainer decision.”
Diggs was not the only wide receiver that the Houston Texans added this offseason. They recently pulled off a trade with the Los Angeles Rams for Ben Skowronek, who brings a lot of talent to the field as well. Outside of Diggs and Skowronek, the Texans have Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Noah Brown, John Metchie III, and Xavier Hutchinson on the roster.
Bringing in as many weapons for Stroud as possible is a wise strategy. However, they simply cannot keep all of them.
Moving on from Woods does make the most sense. They would get rid of his money, but also open up spots for younger and more dynamic players. Houston’s offense is all about dynamic playmaking and Woods just doesn’t fit into that mold anymore.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the Houston Texans choose to do at the position. They may value Woods’ veteran presence on the roster and in the locker room. Either way, they’ll have some tough decisions to make.
