The Miami Dolphins are signing veterans to their roster this offseason with team-friendly contracts hoping to make a big deal with their quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins have lost a lot of players in free agency this season like Christian Wilkins and Andrew Van Ginkel on defense.
The Dolphins are not hurting in cap space to sign players to friendly contracts for a year or two. But it seems Tagovailoa is still awaiting his big contract extension with the Dolphins. Now, that he has seen what the Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence, he awaits his contract. Tagovailoa is among two other quarterbacks waiting for contract extensions. Dak Prescott and Jordan Love are also waiting for contract extensions.
The Miami Dolphins have signed multiple veteran players this off-season in the hopes of contending for a Super Bowl. Miami has signed wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr., tight end Jonnu Smith, safety Jordan Poyer, and linebacker Anthony Walker. They are now adding defensive lineman Calais Campbell to the minimum salary of $1.5 million for one year.
Defensive Lineman Calais Campbell’s Contract with Miami Dolphins
Calais Campbell is 38 years old searching for a Super Bowl ring in his potential last year in the NFL. Campbell played for the Atlanta Falcons in the 2023 season. Now, he’s signing a one-year deal with the Dolphins.
Calais Campbell played for the Miami (FL) Hurricanes in college and was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2008 NFL Draft. In addition to the Arizona Cardinals, Campbell has suited up for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Baltimore Ravens.
Last season, Campbell played 700 snaps for the Falcons. He had 56 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 17 QB hits, 6.5 sacks and a safety. He will boost the Dolphins’ front line since they lost Wilkins to the Las Vegas Raiders.
One factor that made Campbell sign with the Dolphins is defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver. He’s a coach who builds relationships along with coaching players. Campbell also mentioned that “Weaver understands my mind and how I see the game.”
Miami Dolphins Signing Veterans Shows High Expectations This Year
The Miami Dolphins have high expectations this year in being successful under Coach Mike McDaniel with all the veteran signings this offseason. The Dolphins have signed key players on defense and are hoping to improve their game on the defensive side of the ball.
Miami has a high-powered offense but needs to tighten up on defense to win games. The Dolphins are hoping to win the AFC East division for the first time since 2008 and have an easier run at the playoffs.
The Dolphins had to play the Kansas City Chiefs last season in a Wild Card game in below-freezing weather. They could have avoided that game altogether with a win at home against the Bills in Week 18. They are hoping to flip the script with veteran players they signed this offseason.
A benefit in signing veterans can lead to experience in the playoffs. The Dolphins need experienced players. Players like Campbell can provide pressure on opposing offensive linemen and quarterbacks.
