The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Trey Lance from San Francisco last year, but he was behind Cooper Rush on the depth chart. It will be interesting to see who will be the backup quarterback will be this season behind quarterback Dak Prescott.
Lance was the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State by the San Francisco 49ers. He lost the job to quarterback Brock Purdy and Trey Lance never got a shot after that. Will Lance be good in training camp for Dallas to win the backup job over Cooper Rush?
Rush is already 30 years old and Lance is only 23 years old and has a lot of room to grow. That could be an advantage for Lance entering training camp. With Dak Prescott’s negotiations for a new contract basically not happening at the moment, are the Dallas Cowboys trying to prepare Trey Lance for the future?
Dallas Cowboys Trey Lance Will Be Given Every Opportunity to Beat Out Cooper Rush in Training Camp
The Cowboys are going to give a chance to Lance to beat out Rush. The interesting thing about the three quarterbacks on the roster is that Trey Lance, Dak Prescott, and Cooper Rush will all be free agents at the end of the season.
Lance did not play in a game a season ago for Dallas and Cooper Rush saw minimal action and threw for 144 yards. Rush has started games in the past and so has Lance. At this point, the Cowboys need Lance to win the job because he is more mobile than Cooper Rush at this point in his NFL career.
If Lance does not become the backup quarterback to Prescott this season, then his chances of sniffing an NFL field again are probably over. Earlier in the offseason, the Cowboys did decline his fifth-year option but that was because of business reasons rather than performance reasons.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said earlier in the offseason to the media about Lance by saying:
“The arrow’s really up. He’s exceeded expectations as a person, as a worker, as a character. He’s got unique skills. He’s very much what we had planned on, hoped. When we gave the pick, we knew we would be paying the bonus right now. That was a part of the same decision. That’s been reinforced by what he’s been with the team and the person he is, potentially the player.”
There have been times when Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has put his nose in when it has come to roster decisions and this could be one of those instances.
