The Cleveland Browns have to decide by May 2 to exercise or decline the 5th-year option of their 1st-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft. Not only does he have to hear about the fate of his 5th-year option, but he has also been the subject of constant trade rumors.
Despite all the uncertainty, he is not bothered by the trade rumors.
The Cleveland Browns 1st-round pick is not bothered by trade rumors.
Greg Newsome II has been the victim of constant trade rumors, but they don’t bother him.
“I don’t pay attention, but obviously my family and stuff tell me and ask me,” Newsome said Tuesday, via Camryn Justice of WEWS Cleveland. “What goes through my head is nothing. I feel like I’m comfortable here. I feel like AB (general manager Andrew Berry) and, the ownership and all my coaches know what I’m capable of. They know what I bring to this team, not just on the field, being one of those glue guys. Being a guy that’s always energetic. Celebrating no matter what. I feel like they know my value, so no I wasn’t too worried about that.”
Despite all the trade rumors, the Browns general manager doesn’t plan on trading him.
The Cleveland Browns general manager doesn’t plan on trading Greg Newsome II.
Andrew Berry has heard about the Newsome trade rumors, but he has stated time and time again that they don’t plan on trading him. He’s been vocal about it since March.
“I can’t help what players come up in trading rumors,” Berry said on March 26, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “We have that every year, but we’re pleased with Greg, anticipate him continuing to play a big role for us.”
Berry shut the trade rumors down again last Tuesday.
“I want as many good corners as possible. We have, going back to my point about the league playing in 11 personnel, your base offense and defense is really more three receivers in three corners in this day and age. So that’s really how we think about it. Even though we are technically a 4-3 (defense).
“We have three guys who can play press man coverage at a very, very, very high level. That’s not a skill set that I’m looking to give away.”
The Cleveland Browns appear to have made their decision regarding Greg Newsome II’s 5th-year option.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns will likely exercise his 5th-year option.
“He’s a tremendous bargain in 2024 at a base salary of $2.398 million, and even his fifth-year option tender of $13.377 million for 2025 is not exorbitant for a good starting cornerback.
“The Browns are expected to pick that up by the May 2 deadline.”
Newsome’s option will be worth approximately $13.377 million for 2025, which would make him the highest-paid nickel cornerback in NFL history.
The Browns have less than two weeks to make an official decision. Are they willing to make Newsome the highest-paid nickel cornerback for the 2025 season?
