While the Cincinnati Bengals offense has emerged as a league-wide powerhouse, this organization has struggled to put a capable offensive line on the field. On a unit whose struggles culminated in a Super Bowl loss in 2022 after elite quarterback Joe Burrow was under constant duress, the offensive line has failed to improve even after big free agent acquisitions each of the past few seasons. Something obviously had to change.
Cincinnati Bengals Offensive Line on Verge of a Turning Point
After several years of continuous mediocrity on the offensive line, Cincinnati finally went all in and picked up two highly talented but unique offensive tackles this offseason. With one hand, they made a bargain signing to pick up former Pro Bowl offensive tackle Trent Brown who will certainly be capable of securing the usually chaotic right tackle position. With the other, they drafted offensive tackle Amarius Mims out of the University of Georgia with their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While they are both terrific players in their own right, they will be competing this offseason for that right tackle position.
Now that Brown has rejoined the team after a family matter kept him away from his new franchise for five weeks, he has certainly grown fond of his biggest competition. During the Tuesday media coverage, Brown was simply glowing with positive comments to make about the young rookie.
I always try to be a wealth of knowledge to all my young guys wherever I’ve been. I’ve always tried to help out where I can,” Brown said. Then he clarified that Mims is a remarkably talented player in his own right. “Just like any rookie who hasn’t played football at this level yet, it’s just some little things, really minor things, he needs to work on. I feel like he will be an all-time starting tackle in this league.”
Even for the most positive scouts, calling the youngster a future hall of famer is arguably the best compliment the former Bulldog could possibly garner. An outstanding report card from a former Super Bowl champion offensive tackle is certainly not a bad way to start ones career. Mims has already had a terrific offseason with his new franchise and things will likely continue to improve from here for the young rookie.
While the relationship between the two players appears to be forming well as of now, it is still possible that the position battle heading into training camp could sour things for the two goliaths.
