The Buffalo Bills roster had a few major shakeups this offseason. The Bills faced salary cap difficulties after fielding a team that still couldn’t get past the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs last season. The Bills were recently named one of the league’s biggest losers for their offseason moves.
The Buffalo Bills lost a crucial piece of the offense
The Bills had a fire sale before free agency as the team dug itself out of the red before the start of the new league year. As previously discussed on GH, the Bills then made a major move when they traded star receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in a bid to make the team less selfish:
Per Matthew Fairburn and Tim Graham of The Athletic, McDermott appeared to alludeto Diggs during an answer he gave about the chemistry of the 2024 Bills:
McDermott was asked what he’s liked about the “synergy” from so many new faces.
“I’ve loved it,” McDermott replied.” Everyone’s focused, it seems. Although it is spring and sometimes guys have things going on outside of football this time of year, you respect that. But when they’ve been here they’ve been focused and working well together and really more of an unselfish approach I would say.”
Unselfish felt like an intentional word choice and one that could be a theme this version of the Bills harps on. The roster lost some star power when the Bills traded Diggs, but maybe that unselfish approach will help the Bills get more out of the offense as a whole.
Can the Buffalo Bills stay competitive after losing so many players?
The loss in star power has taken a toll on analysts’ expectations for the Bills in the upcoming season. Mike Jones with The Athletic thinks the Bills were one of the league’s losers this offseason:
Could the Bills’ Super Bowl window be closing? It’s possible as this team tries to retool on the fly. The trade of Stefon Diggs and free agency departure of Gabe Davis leaves quarterback Josh Allen without his top two wide receivers. Meanwhile, the Bills also lost impact players Tre’Davious White, Mitch Morse and Jordan Poyer.
They did draft big-target wide receiver Keon Coleman, but for a team that is trying to fend off the Dolphins in the AFC East and catch up to the Chiefs and Bengals in the conference, the Bills appear headed in the wrong direction.
It’s hard to count the Bills out with Josh Allen. But he’ll have to be nearly perfect for them to have a chance at winning the AFC East this season. This season feels more like a rebuild than a reload.
