The New York Jets remain all-in on Aaron Rodgers.
After spending much of the offseason fortifying the offense around Rodgers, in hopes of building a unit capable of quickly developing into a worthy complement to one of the NFL’s most dominant defenses, head coach Robert Saleh officially revealed who will be calling the plays this fall.
And, as expected, it’ll be a Rodgers favorite.
“Last year was a tremendous learning experience for everybody,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters, officially announcing offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will remain the play-caller. It’s about building an offense that can weather the storm of injury. Last year we got caught behind the eight ball.”
Rodgers’ season lasted only just four plays, as the former MVP quarterback ruptured his Achilles tendon during the Jets’ season-opener against the Buffalo Bills last September, derailing much of the optimism surrounding New York in 2023.
Saleh, though, is confident that needing to call an offense without Rodgers behind center will have served as a learning experience for everyone throughout the organization.
The Jets, with a rotating cast of mediocre quarterbacks in Rodgers’ absence, finished the 2023 season ranked 31st in total offense, as Zach Wilson passed for a team-high 2,271 yards with eight touchdowns to seven interceptions in 12 games.
New York Jets Optimistic About Aaron Rodgers’ Return
As the Jets take the field for OTAs, Saleh believes 2024 will be a big season for Rodgers and the Jets.
“He has no restrictions and he looks good,” Saleh told reporters. “The arm talent is obviously still there. It’s really just reacclimating to everything. We’re trying a bunch of new stuff, too. It’s just trying to evolve within the offense.”
