The Penn State Nittany Lions during the 2024 college football season fell one game short of reaching the national championship game. Penn State will have those same aspirations for the 2025 college football season.

There will be a lot of pressure on head coach James Franklin to get the Nittany Lions to get back to that same spot. Penn State feels like they are knocking on the door to potentially be the third different team from the BIG10 Conference in the last three seasons to win it all. However, there is also that chance that Penn State could take a step back in 2025 and maybe the college football playoffs.
Worst Case Scenario For Penn State Nittany Lions Is Missing Playoffs and Then Head Coach James Franklin Potentially Leaves Program After That

Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports talked about what the worst-case scenario could possibly be for Penn State entering the 2025 college football. He said about the Nittany Lions,
“Worst Case 9-3: Ironically, the worst-case scenario for Penn State is one we’ve seen play out regularly. The difference is this season, the expectations have been raised. Penn State proves to be better than most opponents all year, and the home loss to Oregon doesn’t cause any panic, even though Drew Allar once again struggled in a big spot. Full-on panic doesn’t hit until the following week when Penn State goes is upset on the road by Nico Iamaleava and UCLA. A month later, the Nittany Lions lose on the road to Ohio State, officially putting an end to their playoff and Big Ten title hopes. They finish the regular season with four more wins, but it all feels empty. James Franklin’s name is constantly connected to the job openings at LSU, Florida and Florida State.”
People are expecting Penn State to lose to Ohio State and Oregon, but they expect the Nittany Lions to make the playoffs though. If they were to lose to UCLA, that would be very bad for this football program. The Bruins will most likely not be contenders at all in the BIG10 Conference. If the Nittany Lions were to miss the playoffs, there is a chance that fanbase would want Franklin out of town.
There is a chance that even if they make the postseason, Franklin could be connected to the LSU, Florida, and Florida State jobs anyway. Franklin will not be going anywhere as long as Penn State at least gets back to the national semifinals. This could be the best chance that the Nittany Lions have of winning it all, especially having a talented quarterback on the roster like Drew Allar.
