After the Kansas City Chiefs ended the previous season with a thrilling Super Bowl win, the rest of the NFL have now focused on getting better via the draft or free agency. For the Washington Commanders, though, their massive cap space will be a big help for them to improve for the upcoming season.
During the previous season, the Commanders ended their run by placing at the bottom of the NFC East division with a 4-13 record. This included a disappointing eight-game losing streak that eliminated the team from playoff contention for the third consecutive year.
As a result, the Commanders’ front office parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera and hired a new one in Dan Quinn. This move was preceded early last season when Washington terminated defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer following a loss to the Dallas Cowboys last Thanksgiving Day.
With the Detroit Lions beating the Los Angeles Rams in the wild card round a couple of months ago, the Commanders now hold the longest active playoff drought in the league for not winning a single postseason game since 2005. They also hold the longest conference championship appearance after Detroit defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their NFC divisional match.
Washington Commanders Enter Free Agency With The Biggest Cap Space for 2024
Even if Washington had such a horrible season, the team is now entering free agency with the largest cap space in the NFL. As it stands, the Commanders are in possession of a cap space worth $79,614,671.
This amount comes after the league announced that the cap space has been increased by $30 million for every team. This is considered the largest year-to-year increase since it was introduced in 1994.
The increase in cap space is projected to favor the Commanders due to the team having more opportunities to lure stars to play in Washington. In any case, the following months will be very interesting as the franchise hopes to make a splash in free agency to contend for next season.
