Braxton Berrios has been in the NFL ever since being drafted in 2018. Berrios currently plays for the New York Jets and has since 2019. He moved to the Jets after spending one year with the Patriots. Braxton Berrios is heavily underestimated by the national media, being overshadowed by teammates such as wide receiver Denzel Mims, who has not even played a snap this 2022 season.
Braxton Berrios College
Before the NFL, Berrios spent four years in college with the Miami Hurricanes. According to SportsReference.com, Berrios totaled 1175 receiving, 72 rushing, and 488 yards on the return. The 72 rushing yards were from 2015 where he had four attempts. Aside from those 72 yards, Berrios has primarily been used as a slot receiver.
Braxton Berrios Career
In the 2018 NFL Draft, Berrios was picked by the New England Patriots. He was picked in the sixth round according to ESPN. Berrios did not play nor make the 53-man roster. Following that season, the New York Jets picked him up in 2019. Berrios was and still is utilized primarily as a return man for the Jets. In his first season with New York, Berrios was targeted in the passing game only 13 times for six receptions, according to Pro Football Reference.
Over the next couple of seasons, Berrios would see more playing time and eventually become a playmaker for the team. Since 2019, Berrios has 982 receiving, 104 rushing, and 583 return yards. The provided stats are from ESPN and includes the 2022 season’s stats up to week five.
Braxton Berrios This Season
The Jets are 3-2 this season, and Berrios has been a great help with that. Although Berrios does not have the highest yards or the most receptions, he has still made an impact which should be noted. His most notable play this season was against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week four, where he threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Zach Wilson. This season, according to ESPN, Berrios has 35 rushing, 42 receiving, and 204 return yards. He also has two passing yards which should be noted because he has a 100% completion percentage.
Berrios averages 25.5 yards on kick returns and 14 yards on punt returns. This is crucial for the teams because he creates a better field position for his offense. When the Jets offense is discussed, Berrios is a name that is rarely brought up, being overshadowed by players such as wide receivers Elijah Moore and Garret Wilson. Berrios is not targeted often, and it is justified that the others are discussed more, but Berrios is a key member of the Jets.
Without Berrios, the team could be starting further back to start each drive. He and Wilson have also established a solid relationship where despite not being the top wide receiver, he is reliable. While the opposing team’s defense focuses on the Jets’ top weapons, Berrios can get open. Berrios’ largest weakness is he is not the tallest, being 5′ 9”.
Despite not being a top wide receiver, Braxton Berrios is essential to this Jets’ special teams. NY will head to Greenbay Sunday, October 16th to face the packers. Both teams are 3-2, and Berrios will look to put his offense in a position to score more points.
