The NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is the most prestigious individual award a player can earn. The MVP award is given to the best player all around in the NFL, including wins, production, contribution to their team, and individual success. With the 2023 season looming, there are five players who stand out amongst fans and analysts alike who have the best odds to take home this honor. According to The Game Day, here are the top 5 players who are most likely to receive this prize.
1. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) +600
To no surprise to anyone, the reigning MVP winner quarterback Patrick Mahomes has the best statistical odds to take home his third MVP award in 2023.
Mahomes in last season’s campaign dominated the entire league, throwing for 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns, and an overall passer rating of 105.2, while also leading his team to a Super Bowl Victory. If Mahomes can keep doing what he does best in 2023, then he is the clear-cut candidate to be awarded this honor once again.
2. Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals) +750
Joe Burrow has been one of the favorites to win MVP for the last couple of years, and for good reason.
Burrow in the 2022 season recorded 4,475 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and had a passer rating of 100.8. He has been hot on Mahomes’ tail since he got into the league, having the most wins over the Chiefs in the Patrick Mahomes era. Burrow and the Bengals are 3-1 overall versus Mahomes, including regular season and playoffs, developing the Burrow and Mahomes rivalry. If Joe Burrow can build off of last year’s success, he has a great shot at earning the NFL’s most eminent award.
3. Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) +850
Another quarterback in the league that has been nipping at Mahomes’heels year in and year out is Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen.
Allen in the previous season balled out, registering 4,283 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 96.6. Although Allen and the Bills have always had historically great battles against Mahomes and the Chiefs, they have fallen short most of the time, with a 1-3 overall record. With the talent the Bills present offensively, Allen is poised to have another big year in 2023, and could potentially become the 2023 MVP winner.
4. Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles) +1100
After the Eagles surprising route to the Super Bowl last season, their star quarterback Jalen Hurts gained the popularity of everybody.
In 2022, Hurts’ career took off, throwing for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and achieving a passer rating of 101.5, while also rushing for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns. His versatility on the field is second to none, helping the Eagles soar to 14 wins and three losses in last year’s campaign. Of course, the Eagles lost in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs. However, as long as Hurts can remain healthy and continue his upward trend statistically, he is one of the favorites to win the NFL MVP
award.
5. Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers) +1200
While cementing himself as one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, Justin Herbert is in a great position to prove all of his doubters wrong in 2023.
Last Season, Herbert threw for 4,739 yards, and 25 touchdowns, finishing with an overall passer rating of 93.2. Herbert is no stranger to being overlooked by fans and analysts, with the main focus being on Mahomes, Burrow, and Allen. However, with a new and improved offensive coordinator at Kellen Moore, who is known for his quarterback-centric approach, Herbert is ready to shock the NFL world with just how much he can accomplish. If the hype surrounding the Chargers and Justin Herbert is real, Herbert is in a great position to be a top candidate for the NFL MVP award.
