The Atlanta Falcons have been quick to make impactful moves this offseason. Immediately following the 2023 NFL season, the Falcons hired Raheem Morris to be a replacement for former head coach Arthur Smith. With Morris already looking to make staff changes, it’s clear to see what the Falcon’s next big hurdle to becoming a playoff ready team will be.
Quarterback play was one of the biggest issues the Falcons faced last season, switching between Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke to see who fit that mold best. With little success from either QB, who do the Atlanta Falcons feel should lead their team in 2024? Here are the top 3 possible Quarterbacks we might see fill that roll.
#1: Kirk Cousins- Minnesota Vikings
With Kirk Cousins contract with the Minnesota Vikings expiring on March 13th, the 4x Pro Bowler has a very real chance of becoming a free agent. While The Vikings have stated they are hoping to extend the 35 year old Quarterback’s stay in Minnesota, there are still no signs of them coming to agreeable terms for his contract. Through this fog, the rumor mill has been going wild with talks of The Atlanta Falcons being interested in signing the veteran quarterback. With his availability still hanging on a thread, his future on either team will more than likely be established within the week.
#2: Justin Fields- Chicago Bears
The talks of Chicago Bear’s Quarterback Justin Fields being traded to The Atlanta Falcons have been going since the beginning of the 2023 season. With the Chicago Bears holding onto the 1st and 9th picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, it’s very possible they are looking to part ways with the former Buckeye. USC quarterback Caleb Williams is a huge favorite to go first in this years draft. If the Bears plan on keeping that pick, it’s likely they will stick with that script and take a fresh start at QB.
These rumors have also grown immensely after drama erupted on social media. Justin Field’s Instagram account was reported to have unfollowed The Chicago Bear’s official account. Immediately following this, that same account followed Atlanta Falcon’s stars like Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson. As a Georgia native, this could be a very nice homecoming for the 3rd year QB.
#3: Desmond Ridder- Atlanta Falcons
The less popular choice among fans would be for the Falcons to stick with the QB room they have and give current starting Quarterback Desmond Ridder another shot under center. With his performance in the 2023 season being underwhelming to say the least, with both his touchdowns and interceptions tied at 12 a piece on the season, and sharing the field throughout the season with backup Quarterback Taylor Heinicke, his future in Atlanta is nowhere near set in stone.
With this only being his second season in the league, and first season being named the starter, it’s could be to early to tell if this is the former Cincinnati star’s ceiling, but it could be his last chance to prove himself with the Falcons.
Many questions still surround the possible play caller for the Atlanta Falcon’s 2024 season. With the 2024 NFL draft in the horizon, the Atlanta Falcons could once again attempt to draft a rookie Quarterback. The draft is filled with potential stars like Oregon’s Bo Nix and LSU’s Heisman winner Jayden Daniels.
The more likely possibility is that the Falcons use their draft capital to build a more solid team offensively and defensively around one of the top 3 choices. With a new head coach taking the reigns, and a playoff drought growing by the year, fan’s are eager to see who will be under center in the upcoming season.
