Chicago selecting Loveland over Penn State Nittany Lions tight end Tyler Warren was an interesting choice. Some fans questioned the Bears as to why they chose Loveland over Warren. There was no doubt that there was going to be two tight ends selected in the 2025 NFL Draft in the first round. Many expected to see Warren off the board first, but he didn’t get drafted until 14th overall by the Indianapolis Colts.

NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN talked about why Chicago decided to draft Loveland in the first-round of the 2025 NFL Draft instead of Warren. Fowler said,

“Chicago quieted trade calls with the Colston Loveland pick at No. 10. I’ve heard from multiple teams who said the lack of a trade from Nos. 3 to 25 was due in part to Loveland going off the board. Had he made it into the teens, someone would have made a move. While Penn State’s Tyler Warren was the bigger name, Loveland’s traits and upside drove week-of-draft buzz that he was the top tight end in this class.”

Loveland played in 10 games for Michigan during the 2024 college football season. He caught 56 passes for 582 yards receiving and five touchdowns, along with averaging 10.4 yards per reception. It will be interesting to see what he will do with Williams during the 2025 NFL season in Chicago.

The Bears will most likely run two tight end sets under head coach Ben Johnson with Loveland and Cole Kmet. Chicago has a chance to make improvements for the 2025 season. However, Warren will work well with the Colts. It will be interesting to see if the Bears reached for Loveland and made a mistake passing up Warren also.
