The Michigan Wolverines aim for a better outcome in 2025 and to compete for the College Football Playoff after inferior quarterback play affected 2024. The Wolverines’ quarterback room combined for an abysmal 189 completions on 306 pass attempts for 1,655 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. The team finished 119th in completions, 131st in yards, tied for 122nd in touchdowns, and tied for the 33rd most interceptions among 134 FBS schools.
The Wolverines overhauled the quarterback position during the offseason, adding a top recruit and landing a transfer portal addition, while Davis Warren recovers from an ACL tear. A quarterback competition is in the works for Michigan’s offense. Here are the top two competitors.
The first Michigan Wolverines competitor

The first player competing for the starting quarterback job is Bryce Underwood. A five-star and the nation’s top recruit, Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan in November, thanks to a NIL deal rumored to be worth $10.5 million for over four years.
The top-ranked recruit played high school football for Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan. He had a great career at Belleville, recording over 12,919 all-purpose yards, 11,488 passing yards, 152 passing touchdowns, 179 total touchdowns, two state championships, and a 50-4 record.
The second Michigan Wolverines competitor

The second player competing for the starting quarterback job is Mikey Keene. Keene spent the first two years of his collegiate career with the UCF Knights and transferred to the Fresno State Bulldogs in 2023 and played through the 2024 season. He has completed 793 passes on 1,170 attempts for 8,245 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions, with a 22-12 record in 39 games.
After the conclusion of the 2024 season, Keene transferred to the Michigan Wolverines with one year of eligibility remaining.

Who’s currently leading the competition?

According to Pete Nakos of On3, Bryce Underwood is trending towards winning the starting quarterback job. Underwood continues to impress his coaches and has seen the lion’s share of the reps since Mikey Keene has yet to practice, and it’s unclear when he will return. However, it’s still too early for Michigan to crown a winner, and we will get a better idea when they play their annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 19.

I like this move.
1. They’re VERY financially invested in Underwood lol
2. Mikey Keene is a good, veteran presence to help
3. They rely on ground game and defense anyway.
