Since opening in 1975, the Superdome has been one of the most iconic sports venues, hosting some of the greatest sports moments in history.
For several decades, the venue in New Orleans has been a home for Super Bowls, Final Fours, college football national championships, and legendary boxing matches. And this Sunday, the stadium is ready for another epic showdown that could add to its already impressive record.
Super Bowl Showdown Set To Take Place At The Superdome This Sunday
The stadium has witnessed legendary moments from iconic players like young Michael Jordan when he buried a jumper to lift North Carolina in the 1982 NCAA Championship game against Georgetown to Adam Vinatieri’s legendary kick that propelled the New England Patriots into a dynasty.
It was also in the Superdome that the infamous “No más” moment occurred when Roberto Durán quit mid-fight in his rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard.
Doug Thornton, executive vice president of SMG, the company that manages the “Superdome’ explained the simple vision Dave Dixon had behind the stadium: According to Thornton, Dixon’s Vision was to build a venue that could host football, baseball, basketball, and conventions all under one roof. Now what started as an ambitious concept has evolved into a 50-year legacy, one that has withstood the test of time.
“We’re very proud of our 50-year history here,” He wanted to design it in a way that we could host baseball, football, basketball, convention events,” Thornton said. “Well, you know what? It lived up to everything he imagined and more.”
