Stephen A. Smith Makes Big Claim on Kansas City Chiefs Star

After leading the Kansas City Chiefs into another Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes has finally entered the GOAT conversation.

More and more people are starting to talk about putting the Chiefs QB over the man who once reigned over the New England Patriots and the rest of the AFC with his dominance.

And as online chatter starts to heat up, Stephen A. Smith decides to add fuel to the fire by making a loud statement for everyone to hear.

SAS chooses Kansas City Chiefs’ Mahomes over Brady

Sports media personality Stephen A. Smith was asked on First Take whether he would choose Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady to have the football in a must-win situation.

As covered by Sports Illustrated’s Tyler Laulette, Smith went for the jugular and made the bold claim:

“The answer to this question is Patrick Mahomes,” Smith said on First Take on Monday. “I say that with no hesitation whatsoever, but also with profound respect for the greatness of Tom Brady.”

Smith said that while Brady was immediately able to lead the New England Patriots to success, the early years of his career were largely supported by the greatness of the Patriots’ defense as Brady developed into the all-time quarterback he would eventually become.

“In the case of Patrick Mahomes, we’ve been seeing that greatness from day one,” Smith said. “From the moment he became the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, six straight trips to the AFC title game, three Super Bowl trips, two Super Bowl titles, what are you gonna say?”

It’s a bold take for the veteran analyst, and many are disagreeing with his take on social media. However, his argument does hold a point. Moreover, Shannon Sharpe and Ryan Clark–his cohosts–agreed with him.

What makes Patrick Mahomes a better QB than Tom Brady?

One of the biggest factors that add to Mahomes’ stake at the GOAT conversation is his improvisation. He’s much more comfortable to get out of the pocket and make baseball-like throws than the Michigan product.

Another factor is his accuracy. Mahomes has had a better completion rate than Brady and is on pace to keep his accuracy as long as he remains healthy for the remainder of his career.

Yet another reason for his advantage is his ability to carry an offense. The current iteration of the AFC has some of the best teams in recent memory. Moreover, the Chiefs haven’t been the best team in AFC this season. However, Mahomes was able to somehow carry his team to another Super Bowl thanks to his incredible ability and vision.

There’s still a long way to go before we could have a  definitive conversation on Mahomes’ status on the GOAT ladder. It’s unquestionable that he already belongs in the conversation, though.
