The Michigan Wolverines have benched the starting quarterback, Davis Warren, mid-game, which may prompt a change next week.
Warren struggled against the weak Arkansas State Red Wolves defense and tossed three interceptions, thus extending his interception streak. Warren was cast into a starting role after formerly joining the program as a walk-on, and had limited first-team experience before starting. The quarterback has struggled, and in turn so has Michigan, which should lead to his benching next game in place of Alex Orji.
Michigan Wolverines Bench QB Davis Warren Mid-Game Following Three INTs
The Michigan staff made the decision to bench quarterback Davis Warren in the middle of their game against Arkansas State. Warren recorded three interceptions against the Red Wolves defense, managing just 122 yards passing. The quarterback has thrown six interceptions this season through three games, which is frankly unacceptable for a ranked team.
Backup quarterback Alex Orji was given a shot to run the offense, which he did rather well as Michigan scored with Orji on the field. Orji recorded a passing touchdown and 27 yards rushing, but was only able to throw the ball four times. The Michigan football staff still seems to be leaning towards using Orji as a primary rusher for the team.
The Michigan staff does not fully trust Orji with throwing the ball for some unknown reason, but likely because they do not trust his accuracy. Orji lost the starting job in camp to Warren, but now could regain the position with the benching of Warren. It seems unlikely that the quarterback will retain his starting job after such a disappointing three interception performance against Arkansas State.
Should Alex Orji Start in Place of Warren For the Michigan Wolverines Football Team?
Behind Warren is a relatively unknown quarterback as Alex Orji has been hiding in the shadows of JJ McCarthy, and now Warren. Orji is an incredibly capable rusher, but for some reason the Wolverines will not let Orji throw the football at nearly all costs. While Michigan wants to return to their power run, dominate on the ground mentality, they still need to threaten teams through the air and have not thus far with Warren.
Warren has significantly struggled this season and that really does not put it into perspective since his play has truly brought Michigan down. While the Wolverines have seen plenty of talent, and staff, leave during the off-season, the team should not have fallen off as much as they have through three games. Warren is the primary player that should be blamed due to the fact that he is still not on the same page as his receivers, which in turn has killed the passing game.
Warren has also struggled keeping the ball out of the hands of opposing teams, tossing interceptions in all three games this season. The quarterback has not looked good and while the Michigan Wolverines may not like to pass the ball with Orji, they might have to moving forward. Warren has shown all that he can for the team and likely will not improve against tougher competition.
