The jersey retirement and overall recognition for Shedeur Sanders are all results of his father, coach Deion Sanders, simply using him as leverage. At least, this is what one analyst thinks of the matter.
In one of the episodes of “Fearless,” guest host Steve Kim discussed with Jason Whitlock the issue of Shedeur Sanders and his jersey retirement, which they argued to be “undeserved” and a result of nepotism.
“I agree with the overall sentiment. Both of them got statues and awards that they didn’t earn,” Kim said. “I’m just telling you when Coach Prime said if his name were not Sanders, we wouldn’t be talking about it. It’s the most unironic self-own I’ve ever seen.”
However, despite having the same sentiment, Kim argued that there could be a middle ground in this argument.
“Andre Johnson was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame before he was added to the Ring of Honor at his college. And I asked somebody, ‘What took so long?’ And they said, ‘Steve, the university had a they had a rule basically, we’re just going to induct people every five years.’ And they said, ‘You know what?’ They said, ‘That doesn’t make sense. Let’s just start adding people every year now.’”
More than a middle ground, Kim sees the situation as Deion Sanders using his son as leverage.
“So there probably is a middle ground,” he continued. “But here’s the reality. At this point, Deion Sanders had the leverage. They have to find ways to keep him involved and interested in this job. So, if they don’t do it now, you never know. And this was, I think, Rick George’s way of saying, Dion, please be our coach for a little while longer.”

Shedeur Sanders Gets Backlash Over Jersey Retirement
Shedeur Sanders’ jersey retirement at Colorado has sparked significant backlash, with critics arguing that nepotism played a larger role than his actual contributions on the field.
Many believe that while Sanders had an impressive college career, his achievements do not warrant such an early jersey retirement, especially when compared to past Colorado legends who have yet to receive the same honor.

The controversy intensified because his father, Deion Sanders, is the team’s head coach, leading to accusations that the decision was more about branding and influence than merit. Some analysts have pointed out that Sanders’ success was amplified by the media attention surrounding his father, rather than purely based on his individual performance.

Shedeur Sanders is currently preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft.
