The Seattle Seahawks are fighting for their playoff lives with an 8-7 record. Along the way, they dealt with a setback, losing starting QB Geno Smith for multiple games due to a groin injury. However, Smith battled through it and led the Seahawks to a comeback win in Week 16. As a result, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll revealed just how grateful he is to have Geno Smith as his quarterback.
Pete Carroll Loves Geno Smith
John Boyle, who is a Seahawks.com Senior Reporter, wrote an article discussing the relationship between Pete Carroll and Geno Smith. The article discussed how much adversity Smith has been through this season and what he did to work his way back onto the football field. As a result, Carroll called Smith “one of my all-time favorite guys.”
Geno Smith’s Journey
Geno Smith has had a remarkable journey. Early in his career, he got run out of both New York football franchises. After those poor stints, Smith went to the Seahawks to try to save his career. Smith has been on the Seahawks’ roster since 2020.
However, the 2022 NFL season is when his career took a big turn. Russell Wilson got traded to the Denver Broncos. Drew Lock got sent to the Seahawks in that trade. However, Smith ended up winning the starting QB job over Lock.
How did that work out? Smith and the Seahawks upset the Broncos in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. After that win, Smith had one of the best quotes in recent memory:
“They wrote me off, I ain’t write back though.”
That was the first sign that it was going to be a good season for Seattle. The Seahawks ended up finishing the season 9-8 and secured the final NFC wild card spot during the last week of the season. Seattle ended up losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the playoffs. Smith’s efforts this season were recognized, as he was named the 2022 AP Comeback Player of the Year.
Seattle Seahawks Moving Forward
Right now, the Seattle Seahawks hold the final wild card seed. Geno Smith, Pete Carroll, and the Seattle Seahawks hope to retain that spot to pick up where they left off last postseason. They play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17 and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 18.
