The Seattle Seahawks enter the start of tampering and the new league year with plenty of cap space, $62.5 million, after trimming their roster last week. Seattle hopes to build on their defense after a solid start to Mike Macdonald’s tenure as head coach. One position on the defensive side of the football that stood out was the interior defensive line.
Leonard Williams had arguably his best year as a pro in his tenth season, earning him his second Pro Bowl selection. Although Byron Murphy II missed time with a hamstring injury and didn’t have the best rookie year, he showed flashes of potential and demonstrated that he can line up as a one-tech and three-tech. Finally, their veteran defensive lineman also deserves some credit.
Seattle Seahawks’ veteran DT played well in Macdonald’s scheme

Jarran Reed had a solid tenth season, playing multiple positions, including defensive line and EDGE rusher, and performing well at rushing the passer. Reed recorded 45 tackles, five TFLs, 15 QB hits, 4.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 17 games and eight starts. He also had 48 pressures and a 10.7% pass rush win rate, which ranked 15th and 19th among interior defensive linemen who played at least 50% of defensive snaps (h/t) PFF.
Since Reed finished the final year of his 2-year, $9 million contract, he was set to hit free agency. Due to him being a valuable contributor to the defense, being able to play multiple positions along the defensive line, and fitting Mike Macdonald’s defensive scheme, the Seahawks made sure he wouldn’t leave Seattle without a deal.
