The San Francisco 49ers allowed another team to come from behind and beat them in the fourth quarter. The Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals erased double-digit fourth quarter deficits to defeat the 49ers earlier this season.
The Seattle Seahawks scored a last-minute touchdown on a 13-yard run by Geno Smith to improve to 5-5 in a 20-17 win at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday. The 5-5 49ers are tied with the Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams for second place in the NFC West.
Entering Week 12, the 49ers don’t look like a team that can compete for an NFC Championship. San Francisco was missing Christian McCaffrey in the early season, but Sunday’s loss was the second game the star running back has played in since being held out for Achilles issues. Still, the 49ers offense can’t save the team from losing games.
San Francisco 49ers players are “upset” after Sunday’s loss
During Monday’s press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan said players were upset Monday after blowing another opportunity to get into the win column.
“I think we were just, we were pissed off from yesterday,” Shanahan said via 49ers Webzone. “That was a tough loss. We had every ask chance to win it and we didn’t get it done. So, I think guys were disappointed and upset, but nothing, we all know each other pretty well in here. We understand our expectations and we just had a good team meeting, addressed a bunch of the fourth quarter, kind of watched it all together and then we broke up into our position meetings.
“But, I think guys are pissed and ready to put that game behind us. Today is always a hard day to deal with it because of some of the frustration of what happened. And now I think our guys can’t wait to get to Green Bay as fast as we can.”
Is Kyle Shanahan to blame?
49ers fans have been upset primarily with Shanahan for the blown leads. Shanahan’s teams have blown 18 double-digit leads since 2017. The 49ers didn’t blow a double-digit lead on Sunday. But the late-game collapse proves the point that Shanahan’s teams are vulnerable at the end of games. Even in a win against the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 27, the 49ers almost blew a 27-10 lead in the fourth quarter.
