There aren’t a lot of more polarizing players in the NFL than San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. On one hand, the 49ers had success with Purdy as their starter in the 2023 NFL season.
Although they fell short of winning the Super Bowl by losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas back in February, the fact remains that Purdy had a big role in his team going that deep in the playoffs. On the other hand, many think that Purdy’s success is more of a product of the Niners’ system and an incredible supporting cast.
Did San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy Get the Most Help in 2023?

For those who belong in that latter school of thought about Purdy, Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus might have just given them strong supporting evidence for their stance on the former Iowa State Cyclones signal-caller. In McGuiness’s article, he laid out numerous advanced analytics statistics to support the notion that Purdy got the most help among all quarterbacks in the 2023 NFL season.
Here’s one showing the 49ers leading the league in the 2023 campagn in expected points added (EPA) per play on run-pass option (RPO)
“The 49ers generated a positive EPA on a whopping 88.2% of their RPO passes in 2023 including the playoffs. Their quarterbacks went 15-for-16 for 171 yards with a touchdown and an interception from 17 dropbacks. The Philadelphia Eagles recorded more EPA dropbacks than any other team in the league, but they averaged -0.272 EPA per play on those 75 dropbacks.”
At the end of the day, what matters to Purdy and the 49ers is winning as a team, something that they have their full focus on, as they prepare for the 2024 NFL season.
In 2023, Purdy 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions on 69.4 percent completion rate.
