The San Francisco 49ers are the defending NFC Champions and are already considered one of the favorite to represent the conference in the Super Bowl again. They certainly have the talent to do so, with a plethora of Pro Bowl players and numerous offensive weapons for quarterback Brock Purdy.
However, one of their most dynamic offensive players is not currently with the team at organized team activities (OTA’s). Brandon Aiyuk, who had 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season, is currently scheduled to play 2024 on his fifth-year option.
Aiyuk, however, wants a massive contract extension before he commits to showing up for team activities. Tensions between the star wide receiver and the front office were so intense that many thought he could have been traded this offseason.
Those talks died down and now the only option for the 49ers is to extend Aiyuk like he wants.
San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy Wants the Brandon Aiyuk Contract Done Quickly
When speaking to the media on Wednesday, Purdy was asked about how important it is for him and the team to have Aiyuk at practice. He responded:
“Yeah, I think it’s extremely important. He is a playmaker. Love throwing to him. Love B.A. as a person. So yeah, it’s definitely important.
“Like I’ve said this before, it’s out of my control. But for me, I’m showing up every day trying to get better with the new guys and the guys that are here and that is what it is. But hopefully, it gets settled soon.”
Obviously, having Aiyuk in the building and working with the rest of the team is important to Purdy. However, as a fellow player, he also understands the business side of things.
He also may be keeping an eye on these proceeding for his own reference in the future.
San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy Is Not Making Much Money
Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has two years remaining on his rookie deal. Under the terms of that contract, he is being paid less than $1 million per season.
One has to expect that, soon, Purdy is going to want a massive contract extension of his own. He has certainly earned it, having taken the team to the Super Bowl and been named a Pro Bowler last season. Purdy also came in fourth in NFL MVP voting.
As the Aiyuk situation plays itself out, Purdy and/or his agents must be watching how it plays out because he could be in a similar situation himself soon.
