There are plenty of talking points during the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that fans could gloss over for days.
However, one of the biggest points of controversy is the team’s apparent lack of knowledge over the Super Bowl’s revamped overtime rules. Some argue that it is Kyle Shanahan’s fault for not making the entire team aware of the revised rules during their preparation for the big game.
One of the team’s star players have stepped up to defend his head coach. He even went explicit with his defense, saying that awareness of the rule doesn’t change the fate of the game.
Kyle Juszczyk claims OT rule critics want to hate on San Francisco 49ers head coach
Kyle Juszczyk answered media inquiries to the team’s failure to know about the revised Super Bowl OT rules. He went off on a rant, claiming that people who continuously bring that up simply want to hate on Kyle Shanahan.
Bleacher Report’s Erin Walsh writes about his NSFW response to Shanahan’s critics:
“That changes nothing for me as a player, whatsoever. If I know the rule or don’t know the rule, I’m trying to do the exact same thing on the field,” Juszczyk told Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s just people looking for a way to s— on (Kyle Shanahan).”
This tirade was made in response to the callout the coach got after he and other players admitted that the team wasn’t really aware of any strategy the team had if the game entered overtime:
“I didn’t even realize the playoff rules were different in overtime,” Juszczyk told reporters. “I assume you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win. I guess that’s not the case. I don’t totally know the strategy there. We hadn’t talked about it, no.”
Juszczyk was a decent option for San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy, catching two passes for 31 yards, However, he and the entire team faltered in overtime as they settled for a field goal that eventually doomed them to Patrick Mahomes’ late-game magic.
While it can be argued that the team knowing the new OT rules could have changed the complexion of the final score, it cannot be denied that they still failed to score six points in their final drive. The offense still failed to execute when it mattered most.
Juszczyk and the reset of the San Francisco 49ers can only hope that they get a shot at redemption in next year’s Super Bowl.
