BREAKING NEWS: San Francisco 49ers Fire Coach Days After Super Bowl 58 Loss

The San Francisco 49ers are going to be in the coaching market immediately as coach Kyle Shanahan announced on a conference call with the media that he has fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. This comes one day after discussing the future of the coaching staff.

“I haven’t talked to anybody yet. So yeah, I expect all our coaches to be back.”

It is not clear as of this writing if it was a decision made by Shanahan or Steve Wilks himself. This means for the second consecutive year that the San Francisco 49ers are going to be searching for a defensive coordinator. The defense under Wilks finished the regular season third in points (17.5) but was unable to match that performance in the postseason.

In the team’s three playoff games, they allowed 25.7 points per game. It will be interesting to see who the 49ers are going to go after but Wilks was not the only coach to leave the team today as the Washington Commanders hired assistant head coach/running backs coach Anthony Lynn earlier on Wednesday.

Can the San Francisco 49ers figure out how to get back to the Super Bowl?

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of exciting players returning to the team but they also have some significant players that are free agents. Some free agents include defensive end Chase Young and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw so the defense could look a lot different by the time Week 1 rolls around.

Remember that the defense is going to have its third defensive coordinator in four years after having Demeco Ryans and Robert Saleh in that position means the defense will have different terminology. Just take a look at how the Philadelphia Eagles took a steep dropoff from their Super Bowl appearance and lost their defensive coordinator. Now they are in a potentially similar boat.

Sorry the chiefs cost the coach his job. Maybe the NFL should of called it in the third.

Shanahan is to blame. He’s gone way too conservative in big games, you’ve got to play big in big games. Not get a small lead, then try to hold on for the win….. He’s gotta go

GOOD! He lost the game for the Falcons in the Super Bowl a few years back as the Offensive Coordinator and with the Niners as the HC.

So 49ers are the #2 Team in the NFL. They didn’t get this far w/o Wilks. They led for a while. Mahomes, with his experience, knowledge & great arm beat the younger less experienced one. No Kurt Warner magic, this time.

Wilks has a losing record with every team he has been with. That why he keeps bouncing around from team to team

I agree 49 should of sent more then one person at ma homes they gave him to much lead way defense got tired Should of took more chances I would let the running back keep running sooner or later he would of scored they stop there running game. puerdy should of been running more when he didn’t see anyone open steady throwing it away they beat there self

The problem is not the was quarterback itscthe head coach he’s already proven he can’t win the super bowl when in overtime and driving the ball they were close enough to get the first down or touchdown and it seems the coaches relaxed in the second half so again the head coach is the one who needs to be replaced

Didn’t understand the overtime rules? It’s every coaches and players jobs to understand the game completely. That includes ALL the rules. This lame “we didn’t understand the rules for overtime” is just another losers excuse for losing their biggest game of the season. GO CHIEFS!

Agreed 100%. Koach needs to go. I would never have hired him. Mr Perfect is not responsible or accountable to anyone including himself is why he’ll never learn.
I feel sorry for the players . Trade koach for 1st pick in Draft, Hire the best if not best coach of all time quickly.

I am a die hard 49er fan but I will say this ….how did the defense coordinator not know that Mahoms was going to run those two plays when they needed only 1 yard. Stevie Wonder could see that. And they let him run and not force the pass. For that he should be fired!!!!

Rex Ryan should be called for a defensive coordinator job 49ers blitzing schemes are too easy to pick up by the offense and they need to biltz more too. The offense needs to go full west coast offense what ever that offense is tends to stall too much like we all seen in that superbowl.
