This time of the year is the toughest for NFL rosters.  Teams must trim their rosters from 90 down to 53 by Tuesday.  The San Francisco 49ers have released a former Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick in somewhat of a surprising move.

Taco Charlton, the Cowboys’ 2017 first-round pick, reportedly said goodbye to the 49ers on Sunday.  The Niners released the 28-year-old defensive end with an injury settlement, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. For now, it is unclear what the injury is.

Charlton was a Michigan native with a lot to offer. Despite his 6’6″ height and 270 pounds, he had shown a variety of playmaking abilities while with the Wolverines.

Charlton, however, never reached the next level with Dallas. As a rookie, he recorded 3 sacks without starting a game, but only one sack in 11 games (7 starts) in 2018.

By Week 3 of the 2019 season, he was released so the Cowboys could activate Robert Quinn. After joining the Miami Dolphins shortly after his release, Charlton had his best season of his career with five sacks and two forced fumbles in 10 games.

The Kansas City Chiefs offered him a chance, but that didn’t pan out and he played in just 7 games. In 2021 and 2022, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears had similar experiences.
