The San Francisco 49ers are entering NFL free agency with a desire to keep star linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Unfortunately, there is a very real chance that they will end up losing him.
It’s possible that the 49ers could figure out a way to bring him back. However, there are plenty of other teams who will have interest in signing him.
Greenlaw suffered a freak injury during the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs a couple years back. As he started to run onto the field for a defensive possession, he tore his Achilles. That contributed to him only playing in two games during the 2024 season.
All of that being said, a new update has been given about Greenlaw and what his future could end up being.
San Francisco 49ers Face Concerning Update About Star Free Agent
Michael Silver of The Athletic has revealed a new update about Greenlaw. While the 49ers want to bring him back, Silver stated that there are at least three other teams who will try to sign him.
“The 49ers really want Dre Greenlaw to return. At least three other teams really want him. It will be hard for the 49ers to keep Fred Warner’s partner in grime–not impossible, though.”
During the 2023 season in 16 games, Greenlaw showed what he’s capable of bringing to the field. He racked up 120 tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks and four defended passes.
At 27 years old and soon to be 28, Greenlaw can move all over the field. He can play sideline to sideline, which is a valuable trait that every team looks to add. If he can get back to full health, he’ll pick up where he left off.
Some teams will be scared off by the injury that he suffered, but Greenlaw is on pace to get back to being a star and someone is going to be very happy by landing him in free agency. Perhaps, it will end up being the 49ers.
