Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day, did the almost impossible on Saturday, losing to Michigan for a fourth straight season, but it came at a great timing for him.
It’s never good for the Buckeyes to lose to Michigan, and losing to this version of the Wolverines that could barely throw the ball for more than five yards is unacceptable, but the 45-year-old coach lucked out this year.
Ryan Day Gets Another Chance
If the 12-team college football playoff wouldn’t have started until next season, then Day would be packing his bags at the moment because they would be going to another meaningless bowl game after Michigan ended their season three times in four years.
However, since the 12-team playoff started this year, Day gets a chance to redeem himself. If he can bring the Buckeyes to a national championship victory, the Michigan loss will still hurt, but winning it all will ease many people’s pain since that is the biggest goal for any college football team.
Losing to your biggest rival is always a Big No, but winning a title has to keep Day for another few more seasons.
Just because Day lost to Michigan for a fourth straight season doesn’t mean he will be fired, no matter what happens in the playoffs. It would be impossible to fire a guy who wins it all because he couldn’t beat Michigan.
Day can’t redeem himself against Michigan for another 365 days, but he can give fans and boosters to support him again if he brings home a national championship.
If Day doesn’t win it all, there is a great chance he is out the door, and he should be since Ohio State has the best roster in the country. They would have three losses, failing to reach all their goals.
