The Pittsburgh Steelers have a big decision to make on Russell Wilson and Justin Fields before free agency starts in March.
The Steelers signed quarterbacks Fields, Wilson, and Kyle Allen to a one-year contract in 2024. Fields started the first six games of the season while Wilson healed from a calf injury he sustained in the preseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers want to bring back a QB from 2024
On Monday, Pittsburgh’s owner Art Rooney II said he hoped to sign Fields or Wilson, but he doesn’t see a scenario where both return in 2025.
“I wouldn’t close the door, but I’d say it’s probably unlikely,” Rooney said via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “I think both of them see themselves as starters and I don’t know that they want to share the same job again next year. So, I would say most likely we probably don’t wind up bringing them both back…
“They’re both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them. So that’ll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward.”
On Tuesday, the Steelers made an announcement that could hold weight in who they decide to re-sign.
Russell Wilson made the 2025 AFC Pro Bowl team
Per Pittsburgh, Wilson made the AFC Pro Bowl team despite missing the start of the season. He will take Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s place.
“Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was named to the Pro Bowl Games as a replacement for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who is unable to play due to an injury,” per the Steelers’ website. “Wilson will be making his 10th Pro Bowl appearance (2012-15, 2017-21, 2024), which is tied for fifth-most among quarterbacks in NFL history.
“Wilson started the final 11 games of the 2024 season after coming back from a calf injury he suffered at the start of training camp. Wilson completed 214 of 336 passes (63.7%) for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had 43 rushes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.”
The Steelers went 10-7 and reached the wild card round with Wilson and Fields under center. However, Pittsburgh’s offense flamed out toward the end of the regular season, as the team lost four straight games before losing 28-14 to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild card round.
There were issues in the locker room during the losing streak, despite Wilson’s leadership being a position presence for Pittsburgh.
