Roquan Smith fined $16,833 by NFL for hip-drop violation.

Smith’s tackle on Godwin upon multiple replays last week looked like a routine play. However, upon closer inspection this Friday, it was identified as a “hip-drop tackle.” making Roquan the first to be penalized for a hip-drop violation in NFL history.

Despite the fact that the hip-drop tackle method was actually treated as an actual game skill in the past, with the player putting his weight on his opponent’s body, and not getting penalized during the game, has now become illegal due to a rule change by the NFL this year on March.
The league implemented these changes to enhance player’s safety and to curtail injuries caused by this playing method. Now, any action falling under this category is subject to penalties.
Roquan Smith’s tackle that led to Chris’s ankle dislocation has proved the NFL right with the rule changes even though, the NFL Players Association was initially, against the rule change.

Smith has remained relatively professional amid the news. refusing to share any further information, “I never go into any game meaning to injure any player,” Smith said Thursday. “I want every player to go back home safe and sound to their family — maybe a little sore.”
For players like Roquan Smith, Not only will they have to handle the complexities of the game, but they will also need to train themselves to adapt to the new regulations. Which may not be easy. As sometimes, it may not always agree with instant game-time instincts.
