The Ohio State Buckeyes have a quarterback battle leading up to the start of the 2025 college football season, but it appears as if Julian Sayin is going to win the starting job for the 2025 season. This will be the fourth straight season that head coach Ryan Day will have a different starting quarterback.

With Sayin most likely to win the job, Lincoln Keinholz will be the backup and Tavien St. Clair will be the third string quarterback. Having Jeremiah Smith as the number one receiving option will help Sayin. Also, Carnell Tate is expected to emerge in 2025 at wide receiver for the Buckeyes. With Saying projected to be the starting quarterback, which NFL quarterback is he drawing comparisons too?
Ohio State Buckeyes Quarterback Julian Sayin Being Compared To NFL Quarterback Mac Jones

Sayin during the 2024 college football season in limited action completed 41.7% of his passes for 84 yards and one touchdown. He will have a much bigger role with the football program during the 2025 season. Sayin however, is already getting NFL comparisons from other college football analysts.
On3 sports said,
“Julian Sayin’s accuracy and feel as an in-structure passer reminds us of Mac Jones. Sayin was more productive and plays in a spread offense, while Jones is bigger and worked primarily from under center at the prep level.”
Jones was the 15th overall pick by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars before the 2024 season and spent the entire season with Jacksonville. Jones is now with the San Francisco 49ers being the backup quarterback to Brock Purdy.
Jones was with the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2017-2020. He was Alabama’s starting quarterback when he led them to a national title against the Buckeyes during the 2020 college football season. Jones had two elite wide receivers during that season with Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith. With Sayin, he will have Smith and Tate to throw too.
Smith will be a first-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft, but Tate could be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. It is interesting that the Buckeyes quarterback is being compared to an NFL quarterback before getting full-time game reps with Ohio State also.
