Sometimes, all a player needs to start a solid career in the NFL is just a small chance. For former Notre Dame Fighting Irish running back Max Hurleman, that could be the time when the Pittsburgh Steelers took him as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL draft.
Hurleman, who began his career in college football with Colgate in the FCS, moved to the FBS by transferring to the Fighting Irish, who used him in a variety of ways. That versatility was something that caught the eye of the Steelers when he tried out for them. The Steelers have a number of areas to address, so someone like Hurleman could contribute to filling those holes.

There is no certainty that Hurleman will make the cuts down the road, but he’s thankful nonetheless for the opportunity.

“Thankful to a really good organization like the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Hurleman said in his opening statement. “I can’t thank them enough. Coach (Mike) Tomlin, Mr. Rooney, Mr. Khan, for just affording me this opportunity, and I’m going to make them right in their decision.”
Even with the departure of Najee Harris, the Steelers still have a deep running back room at the moment, which isn’t great for Hurleman’s outlook. The Steelers currently have Jaylen Warran, Kaleb Johnson, Kenneth Gainwell and Trey Sermon. Then again, anything can happen in the training camp.
