Mike Tomlin’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers was doubtful for much of the 2023 season. Many fans wanted Tomlin gone after they started off December with three straight losses, two of which were to league bottom feeders this season, the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots.
Pittsburgh Steelers fans wanted Mike Tomlin gone this season
The Steelers turned around their playoff prospects following the loss to the Indianapolis Colts and will play in a Wild Card matchup Monday with the Buffalo Bills. However, Tomlin’s plans for next season are still in doubt. We’ll look at a trade with the coach-needy Dallas Cowboys the Steelers could make this offseason.
According to Mike Florio with NBC Sports, Tomlin hasn’t signed an extension with the Steelers. He has one year left on his contract, and Tomlin has never entered a season as a lame-duck coach. Tomlin might decide this offseason not to go into a lame-duck year with a team in the middle of a quarterback controversy.
Florio thinks the Steelers could trade Tomlin to get some compensation for losing a Super Bowl-winning coach:
The options (as we see them) are this: (1) sign a new contract with the Steelers; (2) resign and wait to see whether another team contacts the Steelers about acquiring his contractual rights in 2024; (3) resign, sit out a year, and see whether another team contacts the Steelers about acquiring his rights in 2025; or (4) decline to sign an extension, finish his contract in 2024, and become a free agent.
Absent an extension, Tomlin would become the hottest commodity entering the 2025. Plenty of teams have been waiting for a chance to hire him. Some teams would fire coaches they currently have if they knew they could get him.
The Dallas Cowboys trade for Tomlin in this trade proposal
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones placed head coach Mike McCarthy on the hot seat before the postseason started. The Cowboys lost in the Wild Card at home Sunday to the Green Bay Packers. Jones didn’t seem willing to commit to McCarthy after the game.
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been linked to the Cowboys this season as a potential replacement. However, there’s a good chance Belichick lands with another team. The Cowboys could trade for Tomlin, as he’d be an improvement over McCarthy.
Steelers receive
- 2024 second-round pick
Cowboys receive
- Tomlin
The Cowboys would lose much-needed draft capital from a small 2024 draft class. (The Cowboys only have five picks in the 2024 draft.) However, they’d have one of the most revered coaches in the league on their sideline.
The Steelers would lose a great coach, albeit one that needs a fresh start. And the second-round pick they’d fetch from the Cowboys would help the team build back their offensive line.

Not sure I would put all the blame on Tomlin for this years Steeler failures. A number of injuries to the front lines was a serious cause but that affected many other teams who endured the same.
I think the Steelers have a great defense, especially with their two top notch linebackers. They need to secure a quality quarterback and a stronger offensive line.
Tomlin has needed to go for the last five years !!! We need a fresh start in the BURG !!
Pure stupidity
