Pittsburgh Steelers Urged to Trade for Disgruntled 2x Pro Bowl WR After Signing Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers, at long last, signed four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers over the weekend. A future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Steelers for what could very well be the final season of his illustrious career.

Regardless of whatever narratives there are as to why it took Rodgers so long to decide, there is one thing that cannot be denied: the Steelers believe that he gives them the best chance to win in 2025 and Rodgers himself wanted to play for a team that could potentially reach the Super Bowl.

While it is true that Pittsburgh was the only NFL team that seriously considered adding Rodgers, it must be remembered that, even before the news of his release from the New York Jets was made public, the Steelers were a popular proposed landing spot for him because a good quarterback could potentially lead them to the Super Bowl.

And now that they have Rodgers, many believe Pittsburgh should truly go all-in.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Are Urged to Pair Aaron Rodgers with Terry McLaurin

Pittsburgh has already traded for one Pro Bowl wide receiver so far this offseason. Earlier this year, they acquired and then extended two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. It was Metcalf’s reported private workout with Rodgers a few weeks ago that led many to believe that a deal would get done.

But now that they have both Rodgers and Metcalf, there are some who believe the Steelers need another offensive weapon in order to truly be considered legitimate contenders, especially after they shipped George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

One wide receiver that may be available is Washington Commanders star Terry McLaurin, who left voluntary workouts last week because he was frustrated with the lack of progress on a new contract. There are some who believe he could be traded yet this summer as a result.

Khristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently wrote an article examining six possible landing spots for the two-time Pro Bowler, and listed the Steelers as one of them:

“While the Steelers traded for Metcalf this offseason, they also dealt George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. While a lineup of Metcalf, Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III and tight end Pat Freiermuth is respectable, Pittsburgh could use a playmaker like McLaurin.

“And if the Steelers were ever going to go all-in on a season, this is the one. On Friday, they made their one-year deal with quarterback Aaron Rodgers official.

“Though Rodgers had a largely forgettable season with the Jets in 2024, he was coming back from a torn Achilles. In theory, the 41-year-old will be an upgrade over last year’s duo of Fields and Russell Wilson. If the Steelers hope to make a legitimate run at a Super Bowl with Rodgers, however, they should look for all of the receiver help they can get.

“McLaurin, who is a pristine route-runner who can attack all areas of the field, would complement Rodgers well.

“Pittsburgh may have to pay a premium in terms of draft capital to acquire McLaurin for a couple of reasons. For one, the Steelers are highly unlikely to be picking near the top of the draft order. Under head coach Mike Tomlin, they simply don’t experience sub-.500 seasons.

“Secondly, the Steelers won’t want to surrender any potential contributors in a trade. Their play for Rodgers suggests they believe they can make a serious run this season. They’re not going to part with a player who can help them achieve that goal.

“Of course, acquiring McLaurin wouldn’t have to be a one-year investment. With $32.3 million in cap space, the Steelers could afford to lock him up long-term.”

Knox proposes that Pittsburgh would only have to send a first round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and the fifth round pick they got from the Dallas Cowboys in the Pickens trade in order to get McLaurin.

The problem, though, is that McLaurin has not yet demanded a trade. Indeed, the Commanders have time to work something out with him before training camp begins.

That being said, the thought of adding him to this Steelers offense with Rodgers under center is very intriguing.
