The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long history of drafting and developing blue collar players that fans easily identify with. Their work ethic and nose-to-the-grindstone demeanor endears them to NFL fans around the world, but especially in a city full of hard workers like Pittsburgh.
Craig Wolfley was the epitome of this kind of player. He spent a decade on the Steelers’ offensive line before playing the final two years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings.
Sadly, news broke today that Wolfley has passed away at the age of 66.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Lineman Craig Wolfley Has Passed Away

On Monday, it was reported that Wolfley had passed away after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Faith, six children, and brother Ron Wolfley, who played running back in the NFL for the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals, Los Angles Rams, and Cleveland Browns.
After his second NFL season in 1981, Wolfley finished fifth in the World’s Strongest Man competition. Following his playing career, he worked as a sideline reporter and later play-by-play commentor for the Steelers.
In a statement, Art Rooney II, the owner of the Steelers, said of Wolfley:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Craig Wolfley, a beloved member of the Pittsburgh Steelers family. Craig was an outstanding player who brought both toughness and heart to the field during his 10 seasons with the Steelers.
“As an offensive lineman, his grit and dedication were essential to our success, contributing to the solid foundation of the Steelers’ offensive line in the 1980s. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were felt both in the locker room and on the field, and his leadership was always evident.
“Following his retirement from playing, Craig seamlessly transitioned into a broadcaster, providing insightful commentary and analysis as part of the Steelers Audio Network. His passionate voice and deep understanding of the game made him a trusted figure for Steelers fans, and his humor, warmth, and enthusiasm left a lasting impact on our community.
“On behalf of the entire Steelers organization, we offer our deepest condolences to Craig’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
In addition to football, Wolfley competed as a sumo wrestler, weight lifter, boxer, and mixed martial artist. He even owned a line of gyms in the Pittsburgh area.
The Steelers family lost a legend.
