The second-seeded Philadelphia Eagles will host the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday afternoon in the Super Wild Card round. The last time these two faced off was in the regular-season opener when Philadelphia defeated Green Bay 34-29 in Brazil. This game will be different since the stakes are higher, as the winner advances to the Divisional Round while the loser packs their bags.
The Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl signal-caller has been in the concussion protocol since Week 15
One of the biggest storylines surrounding this Super Wild Card matchup was whether Jalen Hurts would clear the concussion protocol in time for the game. Hurts suffered a concussion during the first quarter against the Washington Commanders in Week 16 after his head collided with the turf on a 13-yard run. Since then, the Pro Bowl quarterback has remained in concussion protocol for the past two weeks and didn’t practice or play during Week 17 and 18 as a result.
Requirements for him to play this week
For Jalen Hurts to play this weekend, NFL rules require him to go through the five phases of clearing the concussion protocol. The five phases are below, and Mike Masala of The Sporting News goes through each phase in further detail.
- Symptom Limited Activity
- Aerobic Exercise
- Football-Specific Exercise
- Club-Based Non-Contact Training Drills
- Full Football Activity/Clearance
Eagles Pro Bowl signal-caller receives a massive injury update
Jalen Hurts opened Wednesday’s practice as a limited participant and upgraded to a full participant on Thursday, a great sign regarding his availability for Sunday afternoon. An Independent Neurological Consultant (INC) must clear him before he can return to the football field. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, during Friday’s press conference, head coach Nick Sirianni told the media that an INC cleared Hurts from the concussion protocol. Therefore, he will play against the Green Bay Packers.
#Eagles coach Nick Sirianni says QB Jalen Hurts has cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol and is good to go vs the #Packers.
